Detailed review of Honor 8 Pro (India):
Design and Features:
Looking at the technical specifications, it looks like a great device on paper. In India Honor 8 pro is sold via Amazon for a price of Rs 30,000.
Talking about the built quality. It has a all metal body finish with superb built quality. The rounded edges help you have a firm grip in hands and also gives a nice finish to the phone exteriors. It has a Gorilla glass in the front, so in case of dropping your phone accidentally, you don’t need to worry much.
With the metal back, we have a dual 12 MP camera with a flash and a finger print sensor. In the front we have 2.5 D Gorilla glass covering the display. Downside of the phone we have 3.5 mm jack , single speaker and a USB type C charging port. The power and volume keys are to the right side and the a hybrid sim slot to the left which can hold 2 nano sims or one nano sim and one micro SD card. And to the top it has a IR blaster and a secondary noise cancellation microphone.
The finger print sensor mounted on the back of the phone is very responsive. The performance of finger print sensor is comparable to the finger print sensor in any other high end phone. The sensor is placed just at the right position and can be reached easily with you finger.
Screen size and Display.
The good part of this phone is the screen size. With 5.7″ screen size, this Honor 8 Pro has a large display screen. So, taking this phone at first in your hands, it feels like a phablet. The screen display is really a good one, it has a quad HD display with wide viewing angles. It is a slim phone, with only 6.7 mm in thickness. Given the large screen size of 5.7″, the thickness feels very less in your hands.
It has an auto brightness sensor, which works quite well. It calibrates automatically, so you don’t actually need to adjust the brightness in indoor and outdoor conditions manually. Not only brightness sensor, it has many other sensors as well and also has a IR blaster, with which you can control many other devices at your home.
Even though the auto brightness sensor works quite well in Honor 8 pro, but still in direct sunlight the brightness seems to be a bit low. The display is visible in direct sunlight but sometimes you have to tilt the phone at certain angles to clearly see the display. If the screen as a bit more brighter then it would have been really great.
In India it has 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage variant. Given, it is priced for Rs 30,000 in India, this actually is insane specs for a mid range phone. Internationally, the 6 GB RAM with 128 GB of internal storage is sold for approximately Rs 40,000. So it is good that they have priced this phone at a lower price in India and that they have launched the top end version of this phone in India as well.
In India it is sold via Amazon – Follow this link to buy this phone on Amazon.
It has a single speaker at the bottom of the phone but despite of that it is quite loud and clear. Though it lack the stereo speaker but still this single speaker won’t let you down. Another good thing about the Honor 8 Pro, which would be appreciated by all music lovers is the sound output quality from 3.5 mm jack for headphones. The audio quality is just top-notch and can definitely be compared with any high end smartphone out there. So in terms of sound output from the headphone jack, you are going to love this phone.
In terms of call quality, you won’t face any issues with the sound quality during the calls. The voice through the phone is crystal clear even when you are using the speakers for taking the calls. It also has a Led notification light on the front side near the selfie camera, which glows to indicate the notifications on your phone.
Talking about the interface of the phone. It runs on custom UI, which is called emotion UI – EMUI5.1. In terms of performance, it is pretty smooth and responsive to touch commands. There is hardly any lag and it looks and feels more like a stock android. It runs on Android version 7.0 Nougat and the 6 GB of RAM has been managed quite well. So, thumbs up to Honor here, good job done.
For the gamers out there, the gaming experience is pretty much quite smooth on the Honor 8 Pro. Even playing the heavier games which takes a lot of RAM to run, was quite good experience. Though playing heavier games for a longer duration, heats up the mobile a bit but still it doesn’t affect the gaming experience.
With 4000 mAh battery, Honor 8 pro has a great battery life. With 24 hrs of standby time, you can easily get 5-6 hrs of on screen time. So, if you not a heavy user, you can expect the battery to last for almost 2 days! The powerful battery perfectly fits into the slim device body. If you compare the battery life with it’s direct competitor Oneplus 5, then you will find that it lasts for 30 – 40 mins more than Oneplus 5.
The mobile comes with an 18 W fast charger and it takes around 2 hrs to fully charge Honor 8 Pro.
Talking about the camera specs and quality. It has dual 12 MP rear camera and 8 MP front camera. The dual rear camera comes with 2 sensors – one RGB sensor and one monochrome sensor. The smartphone combines pictures from both these sensors to gives you a great picture quality as the final result.
In outdoor condition where we have substantial light, the picture comes out really good. The camera has a dynamic range and the color reproduction is quite good as well.
In indoor limited light conditions, the camera performance was pretty ok, if not bad. If you compare the low light condition pictures with the other high end flagship phones like Galaxy S8 or Pixel, then you will find the picture quality to be just descent in Honor 8.
The dual camera lens is f/2.2 lens, so it takes up less light than the f/1.8 lens in other smartphones. So you might end of not having great quality pictures in extreme low light conditions. Might get fixed in the next updates from Honor.
Also, if you are taking continuous pictures from Honor 8 pro, then the back side of the phone near the lens starts to warm up. The same happens if you are shooting long videos from the phone. Though this does not affect the performance of the phone, but still the warming up of the back side is not that one would expect from a flagship phone.
Regarding the video captured from Honor 8 Pro, the quality of the videos is quite good. The quality of videos is quite good if you are shooting in 1080 p, but as you move from the 1080 p to 4K videos, it seems to lack the optical image stabilization. So you might observe some shakiness if you are shooting videos in 4K.
Well, no doubt in terms of hardware, the phone provides the best hardware configuration in this price range. The camera quality is quite good and also overall performance is quite great as well. With very responsive finger print sensor and a brilliant high resolution display, this phone delivers a smooth experience. With high power display and high power chip, the battery is expected to drain fast but with 4000 mAh battery, it really lasts long. So all in all, it’s a good phone overall, not only in terms of specs but also in terms of performance.
