Reliance Jio is almost a household name today. Everyone is accessing free data by Reliance Jio. From Sim cards to LYF mobiles, Reliance Jio has created a momentum in the market. The next big thing which is catching eyes of the people is the Wifi Router from Reliance Digital – JioFi. Recently Reliance Digital has launched the third generation of the Wifi Router which is priced same as the JioFi 2 (Around Rs 2000/-), but it has many other features which were missing in JioFi 2.
What is JioFi?
Powered by LYF, JioFi is a portable broadband wifi router by Reliance Digital, which has the capacity to connect with multiple devices and multiple users at the same time to access the internet powered by Jio 4G network. It allows USB connection and also connects upto 10 devices at the same time. It right now comes with the Reliance Happy new year offer, which gives you free unlimited 4G data till 31st March, 2017 and it also gives you free access to Jio’s premium apps like JioTV, JioCinema, JioMusic, JioMags, JioNewsPaper, JioXpressNews,
JioCloud, JioSecurity and JioMoney. After 31st March 2017, you will need to choose a prepaid or postpaid plan to continue enjoying the services.
Let’s review the product in detail and see if it is worth your money?
Product Design and Features:
The previous generation of the router – JioFi 2 has many less feature than the new version. For a common user it is difficult to differentiate between JioFi 2 and JioFi 3, so don’t end up buying the previous version, which is prices same as the new one. JioFi 2 comes in a rectangular box packaging and the router itself has a glossy and shiny finish, with a curvy body and a power button on the front of the router.
JioFi3 comes in a cylindrical packaging and the router is matt finish this time, the power button is on the side of the router and on the front comes an OLED display. The OLED Display on the front of the JioFi 3 router shows the signal strength, the battery life and also shows the number of devices connected with your router. In JioFi2, you do not have any information about the signal strength or the battery life. The induction of the small display showing the crucial information has made this new router much more powerful.
Beside the power button on the side of the router there is WPS button as well. With WPS button you can create a temporary wifi hotspot from your router and you do not need to share the password with people to connect with the device. The battery for JioFi 3 is better than the one provided in Jio Fi 2.
JioFi 3 comes with the LYF brand battery of 2600 mAh while in the JioFi 2 it was 2300 mAh. With the Wifi router, you will find a good quality data cable and 1 Amp charger to charge your pocket wifi device. The device has a slot underneath the battery to insert your sim card and a micro SD card as well.
The size of the new JioFi 3 is a bit bigger when compared to Jio Fi 2. It is easy to carry and with light weight of 249 gms, you can just put it in your pocket and access the wifi on the go.
So basically, JioFi 3 is an enhanced upgraded version of JioFi 2 at the same price. It always good to have more features at the same price. Isn’t it?
Battery is one of the key features that one should look for before buying any battery based router. The beauty of the router lies in the fact that it could be used while roaming so having a good battery back up is a must have feature. Though, from the previous version of JioFi router (JioFi2) which was having a battery of 2300 mAh, this new version has an enhanced battery of 2600 mAh. Though the official Reliance website and the product manual claims a battery life of 5-6 hours, but you can expect the battery life to last for 4.5 hours on average.
Even, though the battery life is not upto expectation and could have have been a much powerful battery which could last for 10 hours atleast, but given the price of this dongle and other features, this is fairly decent battery life.
The charging slot of this router is compatible with most of your android phone charger, so you don’t need to keep an extra charger when you are travelling and using this router to access internet.
Let’s get down to the real business now – the internet speed. We are talking about 4G data right now, so anyone would expect the speed to be more than 15 – 20 Mbps. Reliance JioFi3 only supports Reliance Jio sim, which is also one of the drawback of this router, but with the current scenario, where Reliance Jio is giving internet access to everyone, the internet speed has been dropped down to an average of below 10 Mbps. There are many reasons for the slow internet speed, if we talk about the 4G data from Reliance. With almost 10 million users using Reliance Jio free services these days have impacted the network quality and thus the internet speed. Clearly, Reliance Digital was never prepared in terms of network infrastructure for such huge number at the launch of the free services. You can also read my Review of Reliance Jio for detailed understanding:
I have been using Reliance Jio for past 3 months now and initially it was just a pain due to network issues. But, recently I have experienced a gradual increase in the internet average speed and also quite less connectivity issues. In the past week, the average download speed in my tests came to be 7.5 Mbps and the upload speed varies between 6 – 8.5 Mbps. During night time speed average download speed increases to 10 Mbps and upload speed is around 9 Mbps.
Having said that, the speed varies a lot from place to place. My friends in Mumbai have witnessed a whooping speed of 25 Mbps on average ! The internet speed depends a lot on the signal strength and connectivity.
After 31st March 2017, when Jio will make their services paid ones, surely there will be huge decrease in the Jio subscribers and we will witness improvement in the internet speed as well as good signal strength.
Here are few pictures from my speed tests of Reliance JioFi3 router
Given the price range of Rs 2000/- and the sleek and clean design, this wifi router from Reliance Jio is worth the money. The main drawback being, the device is only compatible with Reliance Jio Sim and you cannot use sims from other networks to access the internet through this router, but given the user friendly plans from Reliance Jio and free roaming through out India, it is actually much cheaper to access internet through Jio than other mobile networks.
