Oneplus 5 review – All you want to know about the new flagship phone from Oneplus. Is it better than Oneplus 3? Is it worth your money and is the price justified? Well, we will see all of this with other details as well.

There has been lot of rumors and speculations from quite some time about Oneplus 5 phone. But now no more guesses. It’s there in the market, it’s real and good. Let’s check it out.

Oneplus is not an old company but they have established their brand name very well in the smartphone market. No doubt their previous phones have been a good launch and were pretty successful as well. High end specs and excellent performance make this smartphone a great brand name today. Due to their high end technology they are competing with the top notch brands like Apple, Samsung and HTC. Even being a small company, they are really focused on what does the end user need and they are striving to provide it at an affordable cost.  Making a high end smartphone is not a big deal, providing it at an affordable cost definitely is.

Ok, so if you have been using Oneplus 3T, then you are going to love this phone even more. There are some major enhancements and also couple of minor improvements which sets this phone apart from it’s previous version.

Detailed Review of Oneplus 5 Smartphone

Specs:
Oneplus 5 Front

First things first – This phone has insane specs. Period.

Let us see the specs in a nutshell

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa core processor
  • 6/8 Gb RAM
  • 64/128 GB Storage
  • 20 MP +16 MP Dual primary camera
  • 16 MP face camera
  • 5.5″ inch Display
  • Dash Charging
  • Finger print scanner
  • 3300 mAh Battery
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Metal Body
Design:

Ok, so talking about the design of the phone.  Some people are saying that it looks like an iPhone. They have even gone to the extent that the Oneplus phone lacks creativity in it’s design. Well, it’s not true or you may say it’s not 100% true.

Though, the dual camera on the back on the phone is slided to the top left corner, which looks somewhat similar to iPhone camera, BUT as a whole, it does not resembles an iPhone. It rather resembles some other phones like Oppo. A lot of design is similar to their previous version Oneplus 3T. The charging ports are exactly similar to Oneplus 3T. It also has an alert slider like their previous version.

No doubt, it is quite slim phone. With just 7.25 mm thickness, it feels good in your hands. All metal body make the phone look sturdy and stylish. Thank God, Smartphones are moving gradually from plastic built to metallic bodies.

The finger print sensor is in the front, just below the screen and is of the same size. There are very few option for the color of the phone. They have just launched the phones in Black color. So if you are looking for more vibrant and different colors then you can definitely use these skins, which are also highly recommendable for the protection of the phone. Ok, so lately we have seen a shift in design of the latest smartphones. The new high end smartphones are shifting to a bezel-less front screen. Like we have seen it Samsung Galaxy S8 (You can read the detailed review of Samsung Galaxy S8 here). But we do have bezels on upper and lower side of the front screen in Oneplus 5. This is just one thing in design that could have been improved, but it is expected to be there in the next versions, hopefully.

Camera:
Oneplus 5 Dual Camera

Talking about the camera for this smartphone, Oneplus really wanted to focus on it’s dual rear cameras. It has a primary camera of 16 MP f/1.7, with image stabilization and it has another telephoto 20 MP f/2.6 camera. Well, this looks like a powerful camera at first hand.

When you open the camera and take pictures, you realize that it is a powerful camera indeed. Though, the camera options like switching between the dual cameras, shutter buttons, slider buttons looks like a copy of an iPhone camera. But even if it’s a copy of an iPhone camera, it won’t harm anything to the brand’s image and there is a reason for that. iPhone cameras are considered to be the best cameras among the smartphones and if you are getting the same camera, with powerful specs and half the price, then it’s a good deal. Right?

The sensor of the phone is really great. It helps in taking clean and crystal clear photos. The resolution of the photos are really high and moreover the focusing is 40% faster than the previous version Oneplus 3T. The camera can sense the pictures and image to focus and automatically optimizes for accuracy.

Camera Modes

In the pro mode, it lets you fine tune the settings for ISO, shutter speed and more. Color and the image processing is good, though it could have been better. But contrasting and saturation is subjective. Some people like high contrast pictures while others may not. Overall, given the price range of the phone, it has a good quality camera and will score pretty high when compared to the other smartphones in the same range.

There is a portrait mode in the secondary telephoto camera which automatically blurs the background. It automatically detects the subject in the photo which is to be focused and gives crystal clear pictures with blurred background and sharp focused image.

The telephoto camera which is of 20 MP and the primary camera is of 16 MP. You might be wondering if the primary camera should be of 20 MP instead. Well, it’s simple, the telephoto camera is used for pictures which are highly zoomed in, so to get a better resolution you need to have higher pixel camera.

Battery:
Oneplus 5 Battery test

The battery of Oneplus 5 is 3300 mAh, which is not bigger than it’s previous version. The battery of Oneplus 3T was 3400 mAh, which was 100 mAh bigger than Oneplus 5 but the battery lasts for the same time. The phone has been optimized for the battery usage, so it can run all day long.  It has standard micro USB port for charging.

The charging of Oneplus is really fast. It has dash charging, so you can expect to charge the phone in 30 minutes and it can run all day long. So overall, the battery life of Oneplus 5 is improved by 20% from Oneplus 3.

Display:

It has 1080p AMOLED display, so you might consider it as one of the downside of this phone as other good smartphones have a higher 1440p display. So if you have been using a smartphone with 1440p display, then you might be a bit disappointed with display. But if you haven’t used a higher display smartphone, then you will find the display to be quite good.

Backed by high end snapdragon processor and 6/8 GB RAM, this 1080p display has a butter smooth performance. With 5.5″ inch screen, the size looks just right in your hand and pocket. The display of the phone has bezels on the either side, so if you are a big fan of the bezel-less phone, you might have to wait for the next generation Oneplus phone or may consider buying Samsung Galaxy S8.

Smooth Gaming experience

Overall, the display is smooth, you can easily switch between the apps. Also, playing games is quite an experience  with such powerful specs.

Feature:

The most cool feature in the phone is the extended screen shot mode. Once you click on the screen shot, it literally starts scrolling down till you stop it and gives you a one long screen shot. The setting options haven’t changed drastically from the previous phone, with just couple of tweaks here and there, like you can toggle between on screen and  off screen buttons.

You can also customize the screen to the left of the home screen. You can add or delete widgets on the screen according to your needs. There is also a do not disturb button in the settings, which when turned on stops all the banner notifications when you are in the playing mode.

With Bluetooth 5.0 it also has NFC option to transfer data. Another noticeable change is the vibration of this phone is more powerful than the previous one, so there are less chances that you might miss a call when it is in your pocket.

Overall:
Pros and Cons in a nutshell:
Pros:
  • Super high end processor
  • Dual powerful cameras
  • Better battery life
  • Sleek design (7.25 mm thickness)
  • Super quick charging
  • Perfect 5.5″ inch display
  • All metallic body
  • Finger print scanner
  • Alert slider
  • Full HD Display
  • Dual Sim
Cons:
  • Still have bezels on the front
  • No color options
  • 1080p Display (Could have been 1440p)

If you can keep apart the thought that it is copied from an iPhone (which is true to only to camera thing) and if it doesn’t bother you then it is a great phone. Undoubtedly, it has great and powerful specs, high performance camera, good display and better battery life. Keeping all the features in mind, it is value for money deal. Though there could have been couple of improvements which could have made this phone better but it’s not a miss definitely. It’s a good phone with great specs and performance.
